Stan Lee presents: When bionically enhanced vocal chords are manifested into hard sound constructs through a specially designed carapace, Melissa Gold becomes Marvel's sensational, sexy, singing siren of sound - Songbird!
Songbird #4 (issue 4, vol. 1)
"A Little Help From My Freinds"
The Annihilation Wave hit Earth and with it came widespread terror and panic and destruction. Many of Earth's heroes battle the wave on several fronts, including Songbird, who was left to fend for herself after uncerimoniously parting ways with the Thunderbolts. Now she finds herself the first and last line of defense for the city of Cleveland against the Annihilation Wave...

"Where is Kenny?" the reporter asks her crew, "We finished our report here long ago. Can we just find our damn intern so I can get home to my family?"
"More bad news, Ma'am," the camera man says, "Some of our equipment is gone, too."
"I think you both need to see this," the third member of the news crew calls from within the sat truck, "I'm getting an incoming feed."
They rush into the van and gather around the monitor, surprised at what they see...
"This is live?" the reporter asks.
"Yes, Ma'am," he says, "Not sure who the reporter is but-"
"Well give us some audio," she insists, "Then patch it through to our local feed. If this crazy reporter and our dumb intern are stupid enough to get this close to the action then let's make sure it's not in vain. I'm going to try to get the feed to go national."
"Ma'am," the crew member turns from the monitor, "Audio is coming through now."

"I'm standing at the Amtrak Station just outside Cleveland Brown's Stadium as you can see in the background, just off the shore, the approaching and immeasurable threat that is the Annihilation Wave. Though the city has been evacuated and meta-human forces are lacking here in Cleveland, one lone warruior stands poised to defend the city against the alien onslaught. An act that can only be described as courageous and valiant, though the vast numbers and sheer force of the Wave may also prove the act to be futile..."

...My vocal chords burn...
Sweat beads and trickles down Songbird's forehead. She screams with all she has, erecting a sound barrier as high and as wide as she can muster. It's width keeping her safe from being attacked from the side. It's height tall enough to force them to arc over her as they spill into the city...
...I keep it up for as long as I can...knowing it's a stall at best...already the barrier starts to crack...and already I feel weaker...
Cracks begin to form in the pink construct of hardened sound. The ravaging swarm of alien insectoids bite and claw at the barrier. Songbird screams harder as the cracks begin to spider-web throughout the construct. Her efforts, though heroic, prove to be not enough against the Wave's sheer magnitude and force as the barrier shatters into pieces...
"Ugh!" Songbird whinces as the shards of her vast construct are thrown back in her face.
...They're through...and I don't know how long I can last...I use what strength I have left to make bubble over the top of myself...in only seconds they're all over it...scratching...clawing...covering every inch of my defense until I'm trapped within the darkness of my own construct...

"Is that....Songbird?" Kyle Richmond thinks as he watches the news from his executive office at Richmond Enterprises, "I was going to stay here...protect Chicago from this Annihiliation Wave...and although Songbird and I have had our differences in the past, I won't let her fight this alone," he rises from his desk, "It's time these aliens had to deal with Nighthawk!"

Monica Rambeau watches the news from Cleveland upon a small television set on her fishing boat just off the gulf coast...
"This is ridiculous," she thinks, "I know the Avengers wanted me to stay put. To gaurd against a possible invasion from the south. But the Wave is hitting from the north. And Photon is far too powerful to just sit on the side lines and wait..."
With a flash of light, Monica transforms into the hero Photon and takes to the sky, heading north with blinding speed...

"I'm not standing by and watching this anymore, Gyrich," Dallas Riordan says firmly, "That's Melissa out there...fighting alone against that wave."
"And what can we do about it?" Gyrich replies, "Our forces are best kept in New York. Where most of the wave is heading."
"We can't just let her die, Peter!" Dallas argues.
"What can we do, Dallas?" he asks.
"What we have to," she says, storming out of the room and running into Abe Jenkins in the hallway.
"How'd it go in there?" Abe asks.
"It doesn't matter," Dallas says, "Come on, Abe. Get your Beetle armor. We're going to help."
"What are you going to do?" Abe asks.
"Me?" Dallas replies, "I'm activating Red Ronin."

...My force feild gets smaller and smaller...I can feel their weight baring down on me...I won't be able to hold much longer...not like this...please...not like-
KRAKA-THOOM
The sudden erruption of thunder and lightning illuminates within Songbird's force field as the Wave scatters and burns from the powerful magnitude of the attacking weather. Songbird feels her prayers were answered from above as another extreme blast of lightning scatters the aliens from even further around her, so bright she must shield her eyes...
"Away with the, evildoers," Beta Ray Bill shouts as he lands atop the stadium, creating a tornado as he swings his hammer round and round above his head, "I know not whence you came but thy actions will not go without consequence!"
The impressive funnel cloud tears into the Annihilation Wave, cutting a swath through their vast numbers and offering but a moment's respite for both Bill and Songbird...
"Fair warrior," Bill addresses her, "You fight valiantly against overwhelming odds. Truly the sign of a warrior born. I am Bill."
"Bill?" Songbird replies, "I'm Songbird. I can't thank you enough. I thought I was going to die there."
"Save your thanks, warrior for many have died already and our battle is far from complete," Bill says, "My brethren in Omega Flight were defeated by this onslaught, an act that I swear to avenge or die trying. Will you, too, answr the call to arms, Songbird? For already our enemies regather force."
"You don't have to ask," Songbird says, spearing a few of the Wave from the sky with sharpened constructs of sound, "I'm in this for the long haul."
"Then take heed Songbird," Bill says as he soars into the sky, hammer first, "Let the battle be joined enow!"
"Thank goodness for large, muscular miracles," Songbird says, watching Bill take flight, unaware of the approaching alien insectoid behind her...
THUD
She catches the faint blur of green behind her, turning in time to see the fat, pudgy hero crash into the Wave's minion whose deadly intent was aimed at Songbird...
"Thanks for the save...ummm...," Songbird helps him up, noticing he seems a bit dazed after colliding with the alien.
"I'm Eugene...err...I mean Frogman," he blushes, rubbing his head, "I live in Cleveland now...and was hoping somebody would show up."
"Well...Frogman...," Songbird begins, pausing to blast away two aliens from behind him, "As much as I appreciate the help, I think you might be a little outmatched here. Stay close to me and do what you can."
"Who's he?" Frogman asks, mesmerized by the sight of Beta Ray Bill, the eye of a massive thunderstorm tearing through the alien swarm in the sky above.
"Will you pay attention!?" Songbird shouts at him, a hard sound construct knocking him away as several of the aliens tear into the ground where he once stood, "You're going to get yourself killed."
FWA-ZAK
A blast of photonic evergy snorches the ground and takes out several of the Annihilation Wave's minions, carving a path through the wave that reaches through to Songbird and Frogman...
"No one's going to die if I have anything to say about it," Photon declares triumphantly, though instantly is engulfed by a swarm of aliens. The air crackles around them and energy hisses as Photon releases a massive blast of energy all around her, frying the aliens to dust.
"Wow," Frogman says, jaw hanging open.
"Songbird," Photon says, hovering down to stand beside her, "It's good to see you again. Just want you to know, you're not alone, girlfreind."
Songbird smiles, "Alright then...let's kick some alien butt!"
