Don Warren had a long run as the Redskins' tight end, earning a reputation as an outstanding blocker along the way. YOU'VE GOT MAIL: The buzz hasn't died down from senior receiver Chris Shreve's successful first start. A walk-on until August, Shreve had four receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns against Rutgers. He was a popular interview subject during the Hokies' weekly media session yesterday. No.4 Virginia Tech motivated from last year's disappointment By CHRIS KAHN A LITTLE JERK:@ There is an art to kicking extra points that might go unnoticed to anyone except skilled eyes like Beamer's. He's the Hokies special teams coach. After watching two of the Hokies' extra point attempts blocked this season, Beamer said he noticed that snapper Nick Leeson gives a little jerk--Beamer calls it a "haunch"--to the ball before sending it backward. Defenses key onto the jerk instead of the snap, Beamer said, and that's how they get a jump on the kick. "At this level, if you have a little haunch in your snap, people are going," Beamer said. "If they're going, and you're not, your blockers can't get their foot down to get stabilized so now all of a sudden they're getting pushed back. "People coming off the corner are about a foot and a half farther up field, which is a distraction to the kicker ... and now they're blocking kicks on you." Beamer said center Jake Grove will practice this week as the Hokies snapper on field goals and extra points. "Leeson's good, and he'll be back," Beamer said. "All he's got to do is get rid of that little haunch in his snap."

Dads weren't too bad, either, for Malone, Grimm, Warren BY MIKE HARRIS

Shreve said his cell phone started ringing pretty much as soon as the game ended.
"I turned it off when we got on the plane and had five messages waiting when we landed," Shreve said. "I'm getting e-mail from people I haven't heard from in years."
