Older car question

I had an oil change done July 27th and I periodically check the oil level and the dipstick still reads full. Anybody with an older car: do you think this is normal? I googled but the only thing that I found was that with newer cars that's common, but as cars get older they'll need oil added a little sooner. If the oil is full it's not good to overtop it but it makes me nervous that maybe the dipstick isn't reading right and it needs oil. I know my oil light on the dashboard works because it flashes when I start the car. Lord, these things never made me nervous before. I guess that I could email the place that did the oil change and ask. Cathy and Shiloh
