Very sorry to hear this. Sometimes I still find it hard to believe my dad is gone and it's been nearly 10 years. There is no good way to die but a lot of people say they hope they go peacefully in their sleep. At my dad's funeral the pastor said "He's now whole and free." I've thought of those words whenever a loved one died since, human or animal.
