Well, Magda was apparently Roma/Gypsy (since Magneto's confirmed to be Jewish, or at least to have once been... I doubt he's still practicing). And they're already confirmed to be associated with magic in the Marvelverse; Django Maximoff did that magic thing with the dolls and the illusions, and Doctor Doom's mother was a witch (and thus he has magic potential, though he opts for science). Possibly Magda's magic heritage is what enables Wanda to use her hybrid magic/mutant power... and it might explain why her kids have a tendency to get possessed/mind-controlled, if it's a built-in weakpoint.
If that's the case, it's possible that Magda didn't wind up at Mt. Wundagore by accident, but used her magic to guide her to someplace where her children would be safe. Of course, it's a good question... I think she's definitely want to protect her kids. But remember, if Magda's still alive (and barring any kind of magical aid) she'd be really, really old.
On the other hand, maybe when she wandered out into the snow she got amnesia, or wiped her own mind so that if her husband ever found her, he couldn't track her children through her knowledge. In which case, and assuming she managed to stop her aging, she might be around, and getting her memory back might make for some interesting storylines...
