I had the pleasure of visiting Clint who often posts on this board this past weekend. I snapped some shots of what I thought were some very impressive plants. You can't really appreciate just how mild the climate is in the Niagara region until you visit. A couple nice Edith Bogue: border=0> Banana's bitten by frost with the electric blue Arizona cypress: A very tall C. imbricata (5+ feet) Cunninghamia: Cunninghamia foliage: Cunninghamia again. This picture is supposed to show the 3 year old plants (unprotected) of Tillandsia usneoides growing on the Cunninghamia, but I don't think you can see them: 4-5 Year old unprotected Trachycarpus fortunei: Needless to say I was impressed. There are MANY other impressive plants that I don't have pictured (Quercus virginiana, Ilex spp's, Laurels, Crape Myrtle, Phyllostahcys species, trunking Yucca, Agave, Albizia, etc., etc.). its obvious from the 'nanas that there has been no freeze yet and only minimal frost. the imbricata is a viridiflora , I believe....and it was much taller and larger before Clint chopped it back. I thought the Spanish moss had been there for about 5 years..I could be mistaken. The Arizona cypress and the cunninghamia seem right at home in his garden. From what I recall that trachy had only snow to protect it last year...too bad Clint can't access the board to verify. Thanks for posting Paul and Clint...nice yard.

Paul, are Clint SP spreading in his trees???. I would be nice to see a colony of SP- if only in his yard. That cool that he has a trachy unprotected I always thought of them as 8a palms>? the C. imbricata is cool. Funny thing is that Clint has huge Edith Bogue growing outside while Im growing a small one in a pot indoors....

Such great work! I love that Arizona Cypress so much and would love to get my hands on a few actually for color contrast. It's too bad he can't post.

Andres, If by Sp you mean Spanish Moss, then I think it is spreading, but I can't confirm that. Southern magnolias seem to be completely hardy, and I've seen large specimens in many gardens in the region. Apparently Mike who posts here has the oldest and largest S. mag's in eastern Canada. Apparently the C. imbricata is actually a C. x viridiflora. It's MUCh more robust then any cactus I'm currently growing as C. x viridiflora!

Nice work with the exotics. That's what I call taking advantage of your climate and gowing the fun plants. I guarantee most your neighbors have boring run of the mill gardens. Hopefully your great taste in plant selection has rubbed off on a few of them. I agree. I'm actually going to try to trackone down this spring. The colour is UNREAL! We'll see just how hardy it is, since I'm in a zone 4b/5a!

I have it in my cactus garden with an understory of small yuccas and cactus. I thought of planting minors or needle palms underneath it

I tried to mix the blue of eucs and minors but my eucs grow too sideways and blow over. That cypress would be perfect. Jim send some updated pics when you get a chance. My camera died so here I sit.
