After another close call with the law on Sunday while taking photos (See earlier post)I spent a while Monday in my own back yard trying to stay out of trouble while taking photos. We had 30-31 degrees Saturday morning for a little while but it doesn't look like it has damaged the fruit on the Changsha X English Large. This is the first time the fruit has been this ripe this early so before our next freeze I plan to harvest some and see if it can be used and an aide type drink or something. Now that's a SUPERB composition of citrus and palms GH!! At least 4 hours with ~27-28* is needed to damage the fruit. Excellent job!! Keith

Hey Gary, Have you ever heard of Synsepalum dulcificum "miricle fruit"? It has the ability to make sour fruit taste very sweet after you eat one. Not sure what your citrus tastes like but this might help. A place by me sells small ones for 30 bucks or so, it's rated a zone 10 so it would need to be kept in a green house. Nice picture too! I keep saying I'm going to try some form of hardy citrus and I never do. Maybe this spring. It looks so neat in your landscape. Of course your palmetto is about 35 times the size of mine too.

Someday at least. I wouldn't expect temps of 30 degrees to damage ANY type of citrus, including non-hardy sweet oranges. From what I hear, even the sour varieties of citrus that don't have that foul Poncirus aftertaste can be used for ade drinks if sweetened sufficiently. I don't think sweetening gets rid of the Poncirus taste. Changsha is an edible form of Mandarin (albeit very seedy), so what is "English" with which it's hybridized? Alex, that cultivar is a cross between Changsha and a cultivar of P. trifoliata called 'English Large.' I collected seed from a tree at the Florida Citrus Arboretum about 10 years ago because the fruit was one of the best ornamental hybrids I had seen. I think this may have been the source of Gary's tree. Gary's is one of the best-looking trifoliate hybrids I've seen anywhere.

It really is stunning. The other cold hardy citrus I've seen that is very ornamental is a citrange that Hayes J. has in his yard at Anniston. Maybe it's Morton or something like that. The tree itself is quite large and attractive and the fruits are very large and deep orange. Apparently, they're vile tasting. I'm happy to have some good tasting citrus (which includes most of what I have at home), but I'd also like to have some real ornamental ones like Gary's and Hayes'. I suppose my Citrumelos will fit that bill.
