Unlike the first 8 days of November, today was cloudy thanks to Ida's spinning ways. But I had to run down to the morningside area and took a few side-streets for some autumn pics. Its been a GREAT fall for Camellia sasquana's!!! The extra rain or something must have really kicked their bloom season into high gear. A slightly different view of the same camellia, with some gnarly red crepe myrtle - check out the kinda wild looking trunks and branches: I liked the shape of this holly: Of course I had to drive by these amazing trachies and the beautiful fat butia: Tried to get some autumn foliage in the same butia photo: Lots of bananas: I spotted a huge ginko tree in color. Unfortunately looks like it had to get wacked on one side for the phone lines. But it was huge! (sorry, the larger photo was taken through my windshield) Here is another one, I think. Notice the oak behind it is still summer green. Again, this has been the most amazing season for Brugs around here. There are huge ones still blooming all over the place. Encore azaleas still a'bloomin': I tried to name the plants in this front yard. Blooming iris, agave, holly, some big feathery plant, pomogranite, cannas. How did I do? Another big C. sasanqua with some autumn color around: I could not tell if this were a cordyline or yucca. But it was pretty tall: Lots of trachies everywhere: Not sure what this tree was: Fall in Atlanta! You've topped yourself. How you get from Vinings to Virginia Highlands for a "lunch break" I don't know. Next time, call me and stop by Midtown and pick me up! These are great shots including the Trachies and Butia on Cumberland Place in Morningside. The guys that own the house are not particularly friendly. Maybe they're tired of people (like me) who stop by to admire their palms and ask questions. The feathery plant in one of your photos has got to be one of the tallest Papyrus I've ever seen. You're Mr. Palmparazzi of Atlanta! Without a doubt the east side of Atlanta (from Morningside south to Grant Park) has the best palms. It only became "cool" to grow palms in Buckhead in the last 5 years or so apparently. 15 minute drive, man! Which basically leaves me 30 minutes to drive around, take a few pics, and try not to get lost. You said it was a good area to possibly find the largest camellias in Atlanta so it is one of my targets this winter. Thanks for IDing the feathery Papyrus! I was wondering what that was. Wow, you sure showed us more than a couple! I enjoyed all of them. The large Ginko was tremendous size. The papayrus was very cool as well. The Camelia sasanqua have been spectacular here in the SC Upstate as well. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred Siler

But I doubt there were big palms next to your ginkos. We are still not to full peak yet here, but should be within another week. The big oaks are still green, but much of the other trees are in color. Yeah I saw that flower stalk - but it still did not look very yucca-like to me. Wonder what type it is? It was tall. Was it just twice...? I guess I chose to keep repeating until I got a reaction. Like some have done with repeated posts of temperatures. Actually I have a large potted washy that I could have put beside the gingko. But no pissing contest here... just enjoying what we have and seeing the same time colour is remarkable enough and clearly demonstrates our microclimate that we keep mentioning. Not in competition with the southern 7b/8a climate - never that. Just enjoying our microclimate to its full potential. I think that is what this board is all about right? Enjoying our gardening to the fullest extent and enjoying our microclimates... kind of like that one with you on a bit of a hill that helps you on cool nights. Keep finding those camellia and palms! A few green trees just do not get me too excited. Here is why from my standpoint. I think Jay posted some bald cypress and dogwoods and such that were done in south/central Florida by August or Sept. It means nothing to me that we had dogwoods and bald cypress longer here. Maybe they leafed out down there in January and that was all she wrote by end of summer? Heat stress? Who knows. Many deciduous trees here still look summer green - a few more ABG pics from Sunday below. But its nice when we find some with great color - like those ginkos and some of the maples. I think I had light frost on my car about 3 weeks ago but the bananas and ee's and such are still perfect around here - but it was a narrow escape and I have no doubt some of the colder pockets around north GA had frost. But its only a matter of time - our first freeze on average is 11/16. Looks like we are safe this week, but the clock is ticking. flower stalks and Cordy for the most part have have little flowers that go down in an angle. By the way, one of things that I love about ATL is how people mix Northern trees like Sugar maples with say southern plants like baldcypress and crepes and with subtropicals -bananas, butias, ect. It makes for an interesting mix seeing things like prickly pears, agaves, EE bananas and palms all in one planting bed!!! By the way I think Sabal palms in ATL are soo much nicer than trachy- not that I have anything against them. But sabals are truly beutiful palms.

Yes, while Atlanta seems to have TONS of trachies, they also have some nice sabals, butias, needles, chamaerops, washies, etc. When I see a palm here, it seems like 70% of the time it is a windmill. Thats why I LOVE finding big old sabals, butias, etc. I actually wish that Sabal minor and Needle palms were planted more often. But folks seem to go for the trunking palms. I really liked Paul's pics of Clint's Niagara garden. One of the reasons (besides the excellent Niagara palms and subtropicals) is because Paul did not give a rats a$$ that there were bare trees in the background. He knew that palms and subtropicals are the prize (at least for this board). Personally I could care less about most deciduous trees - not my cuppa tea. You and others may love them. I like palms and subtropicals - if I post occasional deciduous trees its just something that may be of interest to me while I am cruising for palms and subtropicals. FYI: On my street today, I noticed a River Birch that is completely green. 2 houses down there is one completely bare. There is no difference in climate or microclimate on my street - every tree is different. Discussions on deciduous trees do not get me excited - they make me yawn. Funny earlier in the season you said our trees were in fall colour but you said yours were in stress colour. Now that they are at the same stage of colour you suddenly say you don't care. When did that change occur? Was it when our trees happened to be at the same stage of fall colour and it was in mid November and you could not use the stress colour one any more? Sorry Phil. Stick with the pics. Recognise our microclimate. Give us credit for what we try to do within it. Mike As for the subtropical look gardens in Niagara. It was Mike from Niagara that pioneered southern magnolias in Niagara since the 1980's. After fifteen or more years of success I finally got the garden centres here to carry them. I had to bring mine in from Oregon with $50 phytosanitary certificates. Now people can buy them at local garden centres. I also gave some of the plants like the albizia to him. I also have had a needle palm and Musa basjoo here OUTSIDE for more than ten years. I posted pics of all of them before as well. SO when you admire that tropical gardens work you might be remiss in finding that a lot of the experimentation points back at the person who pointed out the colour of some of the gingko here and there are at the same stage. You would like to trivialise me to save face. SO if you choose to tell us what makes you yawn... why do you keep posting how green are your deciduous trees. You should ask us what makes us yawn... like your counting my posts after you gave us heck for counting yours.
