It has been an amazing autumn week here in the ATL metro area. NO rain and mid 60's to low 70's every single day. I worked from home this morning so I got out with the camera to capture a few blooms and stuff this morning. Lots of butterflies and bees were buzzing about. This particular dahlia only blooms for me in Oct/Nov because its in full shade the rest of the growing season. This is about the only time of year the 'bears breech' (or whatever the hell this is) looks good here. Its usually to hot and dry the rest of the year for it - I actually tried to kill it once but it just comes back. This side of my yard has my most 'exposed' subtropicals - but no frost yet. My hedychium gingers are still going strong - many new blooms are underway: Fatsia blooms are just going crazy right now: Still a few white camellia blooms left - but they are winding down: The yuletide camellias are still going pretty strong: Loquat blooms still going strong: Various other blooms: I still have not gotten up the nerve to try the Musa velutina bananas yet. Thanks, Jay. Sabal 'Lisa' is indeed doing fine, but it unfortunately is in pure shade right now. I am going to get that situation fixed within a week. The hardwoods are going to get thinned!!! I don't think I really knew what a camellia was until I moved to Atlanta - but I was fortunate that the folks who we bought the house from were obvious camellia lovers - there are 4 that were already here, and I have added a few of my own. Tony Avent at Plant Delights in NC sells a variety of Bears Britches (or however it's spelled) that is very tolerant of our heat and humidity. I have one and I can give you a division. They actually are fine with dry soil .... it's the heat that most varieties can't stand. Don't get rid of it -- or give it to me if you don't like it. I love the foliage. Your yard looks magnificent. Ron, You are, of course, correct. But I wasn't saying it was a Japonica (as they mostly flower after New Year's anyway). All I was saying was that it resembles straight species Japonica.
