Although I haven't been able to pamper them, I feel they have been doing well for being in a pot ! Owari Satsuma. This little tree had 22 fruits and is bending under the weight. As many have said, it is absolutely delicious Blood orange... not ready but not bad for a first crop ! Miho satsuma, I haven't tasted this one yet but I will tomorrow morning

Very nice Lisa. That appears to not be the location I had visited. It seems that perhaps that is the rental? I see the tag on this one showing where you had purchased it. Citrus are one of their top sellers at that same place here. Super popular. However for variety there's a Wally World a few miles from where I live that has a jaw dropping (for a Wally World) selection of Citrus. Not as many medium size trees as say a Mesquite Valley, but probably just as many varieties when they get their spring shipments in Feb. and March. Have a good day! NICE looking citrus! Good work. I wonder... if that first one is so delicious why is it not grown commerically in places further south where crops are wiped out periodically.... Thanks for the update. Mike

Satsumas are indeed delicious. To me, they taste better than any other citrus (with the exception of Bloomsweet Grapefruit, not a true grapefruit and also ultra cold hardy). Most varieties of Satsuma are very juicy and many do not have a lot of seeds in the fruit. Then there's the taste -- just as I don't prefer ultra sweet apples (e.g. Golden Delicious) to sweet/tart ones (Winesap, Granny Smith), I don't prefer the ultra sweet varieties of commercial oranges to the tart/sweet flavor of some varieties of citrus -- like Satsumas and Bloomsweets. There are some large commercial groves of Satsumas along the Gulf Coast and perhaps a few extending along the Atlanta coast north of Fla into coastal parts of GA and SC. Mid teens could injure or kill Satsumas, at least young ones, and I'm guessing that's primarily why you don't see commercial groves farther inland and north. I have about 20 young citrus trees planted outside in Atlanta and I give artificial protection to many of them when temperatures are expected to dip below 20. I haven't come across any citrus groves in my immediate area, but this time of year you can drive around Panama City and see that they are a very popular dooryard fruit tree. I'd guess most are satsumas but I don't know. There are orange trees grown as well, usually in good microclimates like waterfront property.

Lisa, Your pics remind me of the first time I saw an orange tree in person with oranges in it. This would've been in the conservatory at Longwood Gardens - probably around Christmastime - when I was 10 years old or so. It was at night, but they had good lighting on the plants. The oranges looked perfect! And the foliage... To die for! I'm sure that experience didn't hinder my then-burgeoning interest in subtropicals. Jim, Wilmington, DE, 7a Last 30 Years Avg. wow - lots of fruit to enjoy. The longer you wait on the blood orange, the deeper the color will be (or at least with mine that is). When they finally get in the ground they should really take off! we really do Jim ! I like these satsumas so much that I may plant 2 or 3 of them just to enjoy them longer. Blood orange surprised me for its first year.

Hello Keith, many thanks for the compliment. Considering how little care I have given them I feel like they have been very generous. Construction ? what construction ? still nothing. But don't want to jinx myself so I will stay mum at this time

thank you Mike. May be they would not be big enough and give enough fruits to respond to a national/international demand. Then planting more ? citrus land is slowly being reduced in size I believe for real estate.

Lee, you are right, this is the back yard of our rental place. I think I bought that Blood orange in Pooler GA, I was surprised to find it there. But as soon as I saw it, I had to have it. I have such fond memories of eating them as a kid... it was -at the time- really the one I prefered to eat the most. I will need to fertilize them a little more seriously next year.

I will try Gary, that is if the deer will let them grow ! They ate already the ones of my neighbor.... he is feeding them so when he forgets they feed themselves around This is why I haven't planted mine yet. They like eucalyptus, mexican petunias, loquat and plenty of other bushes I have planted already that they have dwarfed
