Today was an Atlanta Chamber of Commerce picture-perfect November day. 72F and not a cloud in the sky. I was driving around at lunch looking for an address and I accidently took a wrong turn and found these beautiful butias and chamaerhops palms. I have been having some camera over-exposure issues lately, but hopefully a few of these turned out ok. There were 2 nice butia capitata's in front of this house, as well as a few Chamaerhops humilis. And took a couple snaps at my office - while some areas/trees seem earlier than usual, I believe peak fall color here will be in about 2 weeks. Mid November is average I think - here are a couple shots. Wonderful photos, Phil! Some of the best you've taken. That Chamaerops is an outstanding specimen -- I like the "thick" leaves.

You have a good eye, Mick. While I thought it was cool looking in general, I did not think about the smaller fronds, etc, until you mentioned it. It does look like a Chamaerops 'waggie', as it were. I have only seen a few pics of the C. 'vulcano' but it looks very close. Thanks! Amazingly, I am still trying to figure out the Nikon D-40, Tom. Its probably like riding a bike for some folks but I still struggle with the right shots. These palms were a delightful accident in taking the wrong turn. Thanks, Mike. It is indeed a great time of year - glad the rain has stopped! Atlanta does have its big city woes like many other big cities (i.e. traffic & water), but this much I can say about Atlanta: 1. It hits the 70's every month of the year (at least since I have moved here - it has reached at least 70F every single month I have lived here). 2. No matter how many drive-by's (pics) I do - this place is so massive there is always something new to discover somewhere every day. While new huge palms are always the prize, this year I am really going to focus on unusual BLE's and big camellias. If I run out of interesting stuff in Atlanta, I will pop down to Macon. Where is that home with all the Butias and Med Fans?? Very nice shots. I'm in NYC on business so I'm missing this weeks nice weather in ATL but it's pretty darn nice in NYC too. I was driving down freedom parkway toward decatur and accidently veered right and stumbled upon this house while I was looking for somewhere to turn around. First time I've seen one of those.Very nice.Phil,if you had told me 20 years ago,back when I was growing palms in Atlanta,that there would be large Butias,and Sabals,and other such subtropicals growing in Atlanta,like those in your photos,I would never have believed it!

Whoa, those babies are gorgeous! Nice find indeed Phil. You are my favorite palm paparazzi. The Fall color is so brilliant this year. I love that burnt orange foliage on your favthe orite tree near the parking lot as well.

Looks like fall in Atlanta is going to be gorgeous Phil. What is the building alone in the forest on your overall view of Atlanta ? The red tree near the parking is awesome.

Lisa - I doubt its an actual 'volcano' palm. It was just a random find and Mick noted it had the minature fronds volcano 'look' to it. The 'waggie' version of chamaerops.
