I was reading Andrew's post below (please respond to his post) about Mahonia "Soft Caress" and I've discovered a very prominent wholesale nursery in Atlanta that sells it. They let me buy things from them so I'm going to try to put together a group of us that want to buy this magnificent C. Radicalis look-alike (well, almost). Y'all send me a private message if you're interested. I'm going to encourage Randy to start selling them. And Jim Rogers at Nearly Native Nursery. Also, anyone want to rent a truck and go buy frost cloth at GroSouth. I need some. A role of 200 yards by 12 feet of heavy duty frost cloth costs about $250. GroSouth is wholesale only so I can use my Tropical DreamScapes business to purchase for you. We could split the cost of a Home Depot truck rental. Last but not least, I'm going to purchase a power generator for this winter, and I recommend you consider the same thing. Aside from having a family that gets incredibly grumpy when the power is out, one of these years, we're going to have a good old fashioned ice storm combined with an Arctic freeze and single digits and I could lost half the plants in my garden if the power goes out. Please respond to Andrew's message below and let's develop some discussion about Mahonia Soft Caress. Alex, Too bad you're so far away. I have 'two' trucks. Do you use the GroSouth in Stone Mountain.? I will not be getting new frost cloth this year or I would help you out for you getting me a discount. Did you read my earlier post on getting more footage and water resistant frost cloth at Growers Supply for about the same money including shipping.? If you find my husband a job (Mainframe systems analyst) I'll be glad to loan you a truck anytime you need one. We only use the Dodge Ram for hauling dirt, sand, gravel etc. It's been 5 months and still nothing. Not even a bus driver job.

Just a thought but if you and everyone you know are buying this plant from the wholesaler, why would Randy bring it based on your recommendation? Why not get Randy to get it in and then buy it from him? But if you all buy it wholesale and anyone can do so I would avoid that plant and wholesaler altogether if I were Randy. Alex, sign me up for one of those babies. I'm sure I can find room for it somewhere! Maybe we can put the new mahonia near some of our chamaedora's and see if folks even notice. I think I am ok on frost cloth - but I may come knocking before the next arctic blast dewsey comes roaring this way. I still have a lot of frost cloth left. Otherwise I wold definitely go in with you on some frost cloth. That's interesting about the wholesale nursery. What other palms can they get. What about something intesting...like landscape sized Brahea Armata.

Of course, I have to shoot you now for challenging the unassailable logic of the Atlanta Palm Mafia! Just kidding. Your point is a good one. Fact is -- I'll buy wholesale if I can. I (and quite frankly many people on this Board) drive a lot of retail traffic to Randy's. He's a great guy and I'll continue to spend huge sums at his place and send other people there to spend huge sums! I pay a good bit to the Rogers at Nearly Native Nursery as well. For a retailer like Randy, Joe, his main business is not purveying to palm collectors like Phil, Marisha, Tony K. and me. We're a drop in the bucket. Louise, hopefully the engines on this economy will start sputtering back to life. It's frightful how many talented educated people are out of work and have no current prospects.
