I just got back from visiting family in Southern Louisiana. On the way back, I stopped at Stoke's Tropicals in New Iberia and "loaded up"! I couldn't fit anything else in the SUV! I got 6 sabal palmettos for $20 each.They were too big to ship so I think they were glad to move them. They're not trunking but are about 6 ft. tall and ready to go in the ground! I'll overwinter them and plant them in spring. I also got some sabal minors for $10 each. They were small but very healthy. Hopefully they're var. Louisiana Also, got Stromanthe--wasn't aware of them before, but they are beautiful! I'll overwinter them and put them in some oversized pots I have in the spring. Oh, also picked up a couple nice sized Clivias. One thing I got that was free was cast iron plant! I dug several clumps from a cousins backyard and planted them around a new willow oak I planted last month. If you're ever in the area, definitely check them out. It seems you get bigger specimens/better pricing if you can get them at the nursery. I already anxious for spring! It's going to be a long winter

It looks like you got some awesome deals. I order from Stokes quite a bit. You should try some Stromanthe in th eground. Mine came back from a low of 12F last Winter.

you fit six 6ft palmettos in an SUV? LOL how did you manage that?! Stromanthe is pretty awesome. I didn't think they were hardy but Marishas has come back which means they've got to be pretty hardy, even in a great year Atlanta would still be zone 8, borderline 9. Yeah! It was a sight to see! The palmettos weren't heavy at all. They haven't gotten to that stage yet. But, I had to get the of one of the employees to hold the frond while I tried to close the door. Marisha--I'll plant one(stromanthe) in the ground and mulch it next year and see what happens. Our lowest temps the last several years have been between 5-10 degrees.

Good deal - even if they could have shipped them, the shipping cost alone may have been more than their $20 price. I can't believe myself what I've been able to fit in my car - luckily branches and leaves are quite bendable. I have a Cast Iron plant here too that I planted in the spring right by the porch, so I'll see how it makes out this winter. Yes, it's crazy what you can fit in the car when you want plants bad enough. About 15 years ago, 22 years old at the time, I bought 12 magnolias and fit them all in my Honda Civic! Granted, they weren't big at the time but with 12, there wasn't ANY room to spare. Today, I look at them and can't believe these big trees made it home in my little Honda!
