Hayes, the only advice I can offer is that I left a one-gallon plant out last winter here in 24-25F and there was some minimal damage to the emerging leaf. Not much to go on, but corresponding Sabal palmetto at the same size were unfazed. It may (or may not) turn out to be slightly less hardy. Given its affinities with S. uresana, I would think pumos would be pretty cold-hardy. You will be on the cutting edge!

Hi, Hayes: Believe it or not, I have a sabal that is either pumos or roseii! These spp. are very similar. Can you give me tips on differentiation of these two spp? Best Wishes, merrill

I have a 15 gal size s. pumos that I plan to plant out in the spring. It came through temps in the mid- 20's (in the pot) without damage last winter. I hope it is cold hardy enough to make it in z8.

I have both and S. roseii has the greenest leaf of any Sabal that I know of. S. pumos has an odd colored leaf: sort of grey with chartreuse undertones, if that makes any sense. S. roseii has matured for me and I have progeny planted around the school. S. pumos is just ready to plant out.

Hi, Joe: Thank You very much! The palm involved is in Gainesville, some miles away. My distant recollection is that my Sabal is relatively green. W/ apologies, is "greenest" light, medium, or dark green? The Sabal in question is quite small. I'm going to try to get it to bloom with narrow band red LED light. You've been quite helpful! And the Leaves are different as well, Costapalmate, but differently from the rest of the Sabals. I was stunned when I saw them in the wild in Colima how different they looked compared to the other species I have seen wild( palmetto, minor, 'Tamaulipas', mexicana, uresana and mauritiiformis) Zac Zac in Texas- Lower Rio Grande Valley. South Texas Formerly Zac in NC.
