Washies & CIDPs have gotta be the worst ideas to try to grow long-term out of their zones where protection is a must. They simply become too big too fast.
Sabal Palmetto is a better bet. It also gets big, but it grows so slowly that you can stay on top of it for awhile.
Better still are Trachies.
Best has gotta be Med Fans and Waggies.
With Med Fans, you get the additional advantage of suckering if cold kills off the main stem.
