Tommy , I have never protected it except to throw some mulch high on the trunk during some of the worst cold snaps . I Don't think I protected it at last winter at all . Other Birminghams in the yard have never been protected either and they are smaller than this one . They are super hardy . I'm glad I'm finally getting one big enough to be cool looking .
I have another one that is the same age as this one but a van drove over it and stunted it about 3 years lol . It isn't protected last winter and had spear pull , but is growing well now . Another smaller one has been defoliated after several of the latest cold winters and had no spear pull but lost its fronds last winter, and the winter before , but it is growing fine now . They're tough .
