There is actually a buried 18" deep concrete curb surrounding the lawn between the lawn and trachies, actually encircling my patch of lawn. The only water they get is from the lawn. Without the lawn, they have received about 2" of precip year to date. Their root apparently tap into the lawn under the curb. Without the lawn, they would be dead.
