I have almost 3 dozen Caladiums planted and each one gets several days of rain and then a few days of direct sun. So just as the leaves acclimate to the cloudy days, the sun comes out and burns them. On the other hand - leaves that open in sunny periods seldom get burned or die off. The same happened last yr in May and early June.
We got 9" of rain in 2 days May 15 & 16. On the 15th we got over 6" in about 2 hrs. In summary, in the western outer DC suburbs there were two 100-1000(?) yr floods and one 1000 yr flood between the 15th and 31st.

It's not easy to see in this Bigfoot quality photo from the late evening on the 16th, but that's a rollback tow truck upside down from the May 15th flood in mid MD:
