This is a good idea, Iíll probably employ this method in the future. Iíve seen my Needle flatten out in as little as an inch of snow, I donít mind the oldest fronds snapping, but its normally the newer ones that do. Trachycarpus does a bit better in that regard, but they arenít as cold hardy, unfortunately.
