Definitely agree. Pittosporum tobira would be my guess, and it's super-common in California. One even escaped into my front entry area--I just let it grow but as a skinny single stemmed tree, not a shrub since there's no room for it to grow out (it's 15 feet tall). They can get quite large too--the California champion is 50 feet tall.
