Don't underestimate the eventual size of a healthy needle palm. They will swallow up azaleas. I personally would pair needles with a small tree that can be limbed up when the needles get bigger. Then the tree will be above the needles. Needles don't mind some shade.
My needle is about 8 to 9 feet tall and probably 15 feet wide. There is a small azalea to the left that will need to be removed. Fortunately, they are easy to transplant.
