No,they are harvesting it..based on most of the other plants are edible. If the cane wasn't sweet,this Asian family would take it out and plant some other food plant.
I can't prove its sweet as the best from hot climates though. Maybe in September its at its best.
This is in inland Fremont,about 3- 5f warmer per day in summer then Hayward. Adds up.
