Hey Brad. I planted that Trachycarpus seed in 1990. From what I remember it had strap leaves for at least four years before they started fanning out. Once it trunked, the speed of growth really accelerated.
Unfortunately Garrya and Azara's have a fairly limited tolerance for continental climates. I agree, Osmanthus fragrans smells wonderfull, as do many other Osmanthus.
