Back in the days before the internet, it was rough going for zone pushing gardeners. I remember having this book that was half text and half pictures.
Kind of like an Audubon book.
I was completely fascinated by the brilliant pictures of perfect specimens. That was until I noticed that they showed (even to my novice plant knowledge) a Sabal palmetto in a picture, when describing a Cordyline australis.
After that, over time I learned that virtually the entire book was misleading or flat out wrong about hardiness and where they grew. Both ways.
Looks like Dr. Odenwald knew his stuff, and the people who bought his books learned a lot of accurate information.
