I've found that on Bananas like Musa basjoos the plant will be alive just a few inches below the mulch line . So if I had a tube 2' around and six feet high and put it over the trunk of a Musa basjoo , and filled it with mulch , I would have about 6' of live trunk in the spring . Mekong giants work doing that as well . Just a few inches under the heaped up mulch pile is live tissue . I'm sure it would work well with many plants .
