I'll definitely check next summer, when it would be most likely to have fruit. I remember seeing these in New Zealand, but that was 13 years ago. I remember the trees had a lot more horizontal spread than the ones in Escondido, and they had fruit (since it was summer there). But when I saw the leaves on the Escondido trees, that was the first thing I thought of (and then the "it can hit 105-110 here on a hot day--not good for a NZ tree"--though there's always the chance that it could be one of those mild-climate trees that can tolerate dry heat with cooler nights better than humid heat with very warm nights).
