Will, if I showed that picture to any of my friends they would have no idea it was painted. I think it was a good, yet courageous, move.
About getting 7 palmetto fronds a year, what fertilizer do you use? I have some kind of superhero palmetto that has no damage whatsoever. It's in a nice spot near the house so that is a big advantage and it has 2 stories to grow so it won't really ever be exposed to strong winds. Because this palm is so amazing to me, I want to give it everything I can. It does better than my windmills. I'll post a picture when I remember the directions for Flikr.
There is one thing though that could be a factor. I have lived away from this property for years and this palmetto was receiving no supplemental water. The house was blocking a lot of the rain as well. Could this have strengthed it in some random way to make it thrive through the winters? It went through the vortexes and is getting a nice short trunk. It should have been damaged this winter. There is one in the next neighborhood that is about 3ft that is completely bleached out.
