It's hard to picture what Augusta must be like... surely must be hilly given the temperature variance you describe. You'd never see that type of variance here because everything is so flat. I do know your "Zone 8" is consistently warmer during these events than is mine. When I lived in Oregon, we had plenty of hills, and I decided in the end that any elevation was a bad thing there, even if you were on the south side of a small hill. You'd get more snow and be more exposed to winds and inversions. And I only rarely saw the temperature advantages that I often see decribed with hillsides here in the South.
