That is certainly the case in Oklahoma. Even when I lived in the OKC suburbs, I ran over a small snake just about every time I mowed my lawn...and it wasn't ever over grown.
Now that I live in the woods, I've killed about 10 scorpions, 2 tarantulas, 1 black widow, around 6 centipedes, and innumerable other spiders(and I only kill them if they are in the house, garage, or on our porches). We also have walking sticks everywhere in the summer...no wonder Walkingstick is a fairly common surname among the local Cherokees.
I haven't seen any snakes yet...though I don't expect that to last long.
