Eastern Washington vs West

My Dad has about 100 acres on the Kettle River in North Eastern Washington. He texted me this morning and said it was minus 5F. I've been there when it's minus 20F.
Here in the Seattle area, it's 40F, and partly sunny. Two completely different climates in one state. The Cascade Mountains split the State in two.
When you drive from Wenatchee across the mountain pass, you feel like you went from barren sage brush, to almost immediately the emerald forest with crystal clear raging river along side the road.
I've been wanting to try some hardy cactus and Yucca species at the cabin, but just haven't done it yet.
