The sweet orange cultivar "Louisiana Sweet" may be one to try there in Augusta. It takes cold damage similar to the sour oranges but always bounces back. Mine is not the only large one I've seen around town, and has endured 11 winters here now in Zone 8A, most of them unprotected. It needs to be sited well, but my area is a bit cooler than yours as well too.
