Best way to start magnolia seeds?

I've got a few dozen magnolia grandiflora seeds that I would like to germinate. Online sources say to clean the flesh off the seeds, keep them in damp soil in the fridge all winter, then sow them in the spring.
I'm fine doing that, but I'm also curious if it is all necessary. Things like sabal minor tend to germinate better the more I neglect them, so I just thought I would ask if any of you have had success with any other methods.
