Re: Bridge in Florence

The bridge is the Ponte Vecchio (literally, the "old bridge"), a famous landmark in Florence. I once spent a week in Florence, back in the early 1990s, on an art history tour.
You've probably heard the stories about Americans going to Europe and just assuming everyone can speak English.... I speak rudimentary Italian so I had no problem getting around without using English. But I had a funny experience in Florence. I'd taken the bus to an overlook of the city and 2 women, who looked lost, came up to me, speaking French. Being of half Italian descent, I think they took me for a local but they just assumed I would understand French. Kinda funny... so the French do it too and just assume people understand their language in Italy! Luckily, I understood / spoke enough French to help them find the right bus.
