I used to protect every needle I had ever killed. I protected my current needle when I bought it 4 years ago. I protected it the first winter, and the main trunk died with only a single pup surviving. I refused to protect since then, and has gone through the past 2 winters without a blemish. Sometimes I wonder if, once established, protection is counter-productive?
