When we have people over during the summer I try to clip off a Magnolia flower and put it in a vase. Then I start passing it around. For the first day the aroma is so nice that it doesn't seem natural. Even folks who don't garden have to take another sniff. The underside of the leaves have a rich brown velvet. Mine don't as much as an older tree on my block does. Other than that, I can't tell the difference between my Magnolias and those of my neighbors. They might all be Magnolia virginiana and are evergreen here.
