Though 80 or 90% of Japanese Maples here are smaller than the one in your photo, the largest are much larger than the one in your post. There are some ridiculously large ones in the Trolley Square section of Wilmington. This is a very stable residential area of the city that goes back deep into the 1800s. I imagine many of these trees are quite old.
One of the absolute tallest Magnolia Grandifloras I've ever seen is in that same neighborhood.
