nice pictures. I would venture to correct you on the "only in California" thing with the schefflera and the maple: here in the PNW (and likely other places as well) you can indeed have an acer palmatum with a schefflera---it will just be a different species from yours with s. taiwaniana or s. delavayi or similar "hardy" species in it's place.
