I hear you.
I have a plain one and a 'Flying Dragon'. The latter behaves. The former pushes out awesome foliage in spring, then, right around July 1st, promptly drops half its leaves. They don't turn yellow or brown first. They just drop. And it carries basically half of its foliage load til autumn knocks off the rest.
Oddly, seedlings can be year round evergreen for a couple of years.
