On the east coast where most palmettos are located you will find wind. It's odd to not have a breeze on the shoreline here. The wind will keep fronds knocked off creating a thinner trunk. Now when you head inland about 5 miles the wind will be calmer. There's an area in the FL panhandle inland that boast about their very thick Palmetto trunks.
One other thing most people here like a slick trunk vs full boots.
