I never realized you can hear an earthquake before you felt them until I moved to California. I never minded earthquakes, but I never felt bigger than a 5.2, which is technically 100 times stronger than the one you felt. While those can be pretty jarring, imagine a 7.0 which is 100x stronger than a 5.0. Every 1 pt on the Richter scale is 10x stronger than the point below.
