That's interesting that the big boxes sell things out of zone. I never had that in NY (if anything they trended colder than they could have), but here in Florida, I am noticing a similar thing where they sell a bunch of plants that are marginally hardy at best as if they can handle the winters here.
Are people trending towards non desert trees? It seems like that was becoming a trend in Phoenix when I visited there a few years back.
I think there's a lot that can be grown in the desert southwest and with a very cool backdrop too!
