I definitely agree that C. australis does best in N. California/S. Oregon! There really aren't that many great specimens here as they tend to get spindly as you say when they grow larger here (probably the best-looking ones are 10-15 feet tall here). The New Zealand Flax definitely do well here as they tolerate hot dry weather better (despite the fact that they grow at fairly high elevations in NZ as well).
