I used to cut every little ugly part of a frond off of my Trachys , and when the fronds were basically dead I would cut the whole frond off at the petiole base . I've decided to let them form a skirt . That would be less work and when a 7A winter hits and much of the palm is damaged I would just let those fronds die down and the pretty growth would grow in at the top . That would save a lot of work , plus I think they will look good with a skirt too . Trachys here put out around 15 fronds a season , so they'll look respectably good a couple of months after a 7A winter . Now all those ugly fronds will add to the look and not detract .
Trachy's lower fronds naturally die as new growth comes in at the top of the plant so I'm just leaving them more natural . As far as defibering them , I think I will still defiber some of them but I will be careful not to defiber before the petiole bases are ready .
