Scot , I think they are more deciduous when they are young . When they are more mature they will be more evergreen especially on older growth ( 2 year old growth or older ? ) . It seems like in a harsh winter the newest branches lose their leaves . It also seems like the leaves on one year old growth gets pushed out in the spring when the first early flush happens in March . On my tree an early March cold snap , that got as cold as 21F , killed all the first flush growth on that one year old growth , so those branches are , for the most part , still without leaves and are awaiting another flush of new growth .
Notice the one year old branches that are basically bare of new growth ( most of it at the top of the tree ) .The darker green leaves were evergreen and the bright green leaves is new growth that emerged after the 21F in March . I think a new flush will grow out soon on that one year old growth .
I hope this gives you a better feel for how they grow .
