I have tried straw bale gardening once before and it was a failure. It was in an odd part of the yard and I couldn't keep it moist enough, nor did I condition it properly. The results are supposed to be quite bountiful. It's basically like growing in straight compost, and you can reuse it for root crops the following year as it breaks down.
