There's actually a growing preference for natives. They're naturally more hardy and disease resistant in most cases (Flowering Dogwood being an unfortunate exception). Palms are probably not as "hot" in regions where they're taken for granted. Here in Atlanta, they're the darling of both commercial and residential landscapers.
