House of M Avengers #2
http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.1941.Weekend_Preview%3A_House_of_M_Avengers_%232
Just skimmed ish #1 but nothing really grabbed me so kept my $3.05. Not a fan of investing any time/energy/money in an ongoing alternate versions series as a rule -- though Elseworlds OneShots, and Marvel What If specials, are sometimes fun investment for a change. Still, feel somewhat obligated to seriously sample the series for the H4H message board. So got #2, especially with the wonderfully tempting H4H-centric cover.
Still avoiding the House of M but will eeeventually give in (BlkGrd
). A strike against this mini, right away, is that knowing that the fate of these characters leads to naught but utter oblivion. The atmosphere didn't reflect this and it seems like a belated marketing attempt to cash in on a money horse that has left the track. So, unless the final issue addresses inevitable limbo the self contained enjoyment of the series seems questionable. Another 3 payments of $3.05 is VERY risky. Haven't yet decided about next issue...
All that said, this issue had some good stuff! And on the plus side, mostly that happens can be nitpicked because the world is tabala rasa with very little canon established. And most of the personalities were enjoyably close enough to the originals before 'Wanda did it'. The really nice art is another big plus. If continuity flaws can be pointed out, it will mar any temptation of getting #3.
Page by page niceness:
-great Misty well done narration throughout that enhances the ending. And who wouldn't want to see the exciting opening splash/battle happening in the MU616.
-and then the previous page is TOPPED with a more exciting double splash/battle!
-Magneto killed Fu Manchu (yes, I said the name - and this should happen in MU616 if Marvel cant secure the copyright). Shang as owner of the Amulets of the Tiger was a nice twist too.
-Cage/Tigra hanky panky works. But please tell me that Shang is purposefully in the wings of the DISCARDED Amulets there for Hector(?) to find.
-PrevPage uniquely helps.
-a new Punisher origin. Traumatic enough and highlights his familiar strengths.
-a new Brotherhood origin. Not a big fan of Warpath in MU616 but this role fits nicely. The eccletic mutants on board is nice too.
-remember Josie from the DD run so having her son run the Bar is nice and his part in relating the 'Avengers' aspect of the title.
-OKAY START A PETITION: There are many parallels with other realities to 616; the origin of Cage's 'Sweet Christmas' should be literally copied panel for panel in New Avengers. Sure, he swearing there, now, but just have him tell Misty that he temporarily lost his way. This origin was perfect.
-Lotus, eh? Nice inclusion.
-don't know what happened to Stark in HOM but a Forge made arm is probably just too fantastic an appendage to give up. Misty's dilemma read real nice. Noting the nice art again and finding a January banner near these pages.
-Leland? The Owl runs the PD? Niiice.
-REMATCH!
-more nice CBMB fuel!
-nice death scene that looks real (given the oblivion parameters mentioned) plus it leads to realy having me guess at Misty's choice... which makes for a nice cliffhanger!
