Posted by Mike Keating I have a fair amount of information on the Keatings beginning in 1778 and up to the present. Your GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Keating’s parents were Redmond Keating and Mary Ryan. Redmond was a schoolmaster at Sand Point, Guysborough County and later a farmer. He died sometime after 1838. Mary was from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Redmond parents were Redmond Keating (1st record 1778 – died 1824) and Elizabeth Spinney (1769 -1871). Redmond fought on the British side in the American Revolutionary War with Jacob James troop of the Pennsylvania Light Dragoons, part of Tarleton’s British Legion. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Cowpens in June 1781 and came to Nova Scotia with many other members of the Legion after the war in 1784. He first settled at Port Mouton but worked his way up the province to settle finally in Manchester, on the Milford Haven River in Guysborough County. Elizabeth Spinney was born in 1769 in Annapolis County, the daughter of Samuel Spinney(born Massachusetts1735) and Hannah Smith born (Port Hood, Nova Scotia) 1743. Redmond and Elizabeth’s eight known children were William (married Margaret Hearn), Thomas(married Mary Whalen/Phalen?), John (married Alice MacDonald –also known as Alice Langley from a prior marriage), James (married Mary Hearn), Elizabeth (married Thomas Hearn) which is your family line, Eleanora (Ellen) (married Peter Smyth of Port Hood – prominent politician – Peter Smyth house is historic site in Port Hood), Michael (married another Mary Whelan), and Redmond (married Mary Ryan, probably in Placentia Newfoundland) from whom I am descended. Elizabeth lived in later years with her daughter and Peter Smyth in Port Hood and died at the age of 102.

We are connected. Eliza (Lena) Hearn who married William Pembroke was the daughter of Thomas Hearn and Elizabeth Keating. Elizabeth Keating (your Great great great grandmother) was a sister of my Great great great Grandfather Redmond Keating. We are 5th cousins.
I don’t have much information on the Hearn family but there are at least 9 references to Thomas Hearn in the Canso/Wilmot town records on this site.
