Posted by Allison Nelson In a posting at genforum on Nov 6, 1998, Torrey Welch wrote that she was descended from James Tory who "settled on 100 acres of purchased land near Cross Creek, NC; and was deeded and additional 400 acres by the Crown. " The other day I ran across a James TORY and his wife Hannah, mentioned in a land transaction in North Carolina this website: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dobson/nc/ncchatha.htm The text there reaCHATHAM CO. NC ds " I am not real good at reading legaleze, but it looks (at least to me) as if a land transfer took place without James or Hannah being there ... with "H. McKenzie & A. McBryde surviving partners of M. McKenzie & Co. & as assignees of James Tory and Hannah his wife, William Self & Garner Self. (Sketch of land). (FHL film 259,412)" Does anyone know exactly where James Torey's original lands in North Carolina were? I know this is a total long shot... but is it possible this is our James Tory and was his first wife's name Hannah?

I am a descendant of James Issak Torey, whose first wife and three children to date remain unnamed and unaccounted for as far as I know. He reported this first wife as deceased when he applied for his land grant in Nova Scotia.
Formed 1770 from Orange
Lee formed 1907 from Chatham, Harnett, Moore .........
LAND RECORDS...
Chatham Co. NC Deeds (Grantee index on FHL film 18,453; Grantor Index on FHL film 18,459)
Copied all to 1844; next deeds 1855.........
X-193: 28 July 1818, by order of court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, division of land of Parish Self decd, to heirs: James Thompson husband of Letitia Thompson; W. McKenzie and A. McBryd assignees of said Letitia Thompson as surviving partners of M. McKenzie & C.; Lot #3 for James Duncan husband of Elizabeth Duncan; W.C. Shedman assignee of Balaam and Thompson Self; H. McKenzie & A. McBryde surviving partners of M. McKenzie & Co. & as assignees of James Tory and Hannah his wife, William Self & Garner Self. (Sketch of land). (FHL film 259,412)
I assume this means that H McKenzie and A. McBride acted on James & Hannah's behalf (and the reference to being survivors is interesting) without them in fact being present or perhaps even their whereabouts known? Since James was in Nova Scotia by 1818 and remarried, he would definitely be absent!
