I was just looking at the 1817 census here and was curious why most of the settlers, including my ancesters (Sysney County - New Harbour) are referred to as "Acadians". The modern definition of Acadians, I believe, refers to settlers of French origin who were displaced by the British in the mid 1700's. Most of these people were of European origin and arrived from the US in the late 1700's. Can someone clarify the use of "Acadian" in this context. Thanks
